Beavercreek Stars History - Philosophy

History

Terry Henley identified the need for a quality youth basketball program many years ago. In 1975, he founded the Beavercreek Stars Youth Basketball Program. He personally funded the entire operation, and also constructed the Henley Hall facility in 1981 to house the basketball program. Through his leadership the program expanded and prospered. By 1986, the program had gained sufficient size and Miami Valley involvement that it evolved into a self-supporting, non-profit organization. The Beavercreek Stars program now stands as a premiere youth basketball program with both regional and national recognition. The financial solvency of the program is one of the primary tasks of the Board of Trustees. A land contract was secured in June of 1997 to purchase Henley Hall. This land contract was paid off during 2005 through a personal loan that was secured by the Stars Board of Trustees. This means that the Beavercreek Stars now officially hold title to Henley Hall. This personal loan was paid off in 2008. This ensures that Henley Hall will be the home of the Stars for years to come.

In 1996, the Beavercreek Stars adopted a Board of Trustees to serve as its governing body. The purpose of this system is to distribute the decision making process among several individuals who share as a common goal the best interests of the children we teach and the prosperity of the Stars organization. This system should provide the opportunity to generate more ideas, potential solutions, and ultimately to expand resources to the organization. The Board meets once a month or more frequently if required to fulfill objectives. Board meetings are open to the parents in the Stars Organization.

In February 2012, the Beavercreek Stars acquired a 65,000 square foot building located at 1321 Research Park Drive in Beavercreek.  The primary intention of purchasing this facility was to utilize approximately 25,000 square feet in the building to construct four high school size basketball courts to aid in the further development of youth basketball in Beavercreek.  The Stars provided $50,000 toward the purchase of the building, with the remainder of the $300,000 purchase price being financed through a land contract with the former owners of the building.  Subsequently, after creating a new legal entity titled Ohio South Youth Sports Space, Inc. (OSYSS), the Stars entered into a leasing arrangement by which OSYSS will lease this facility from the Stars and OSYSS will manage the day to day operations of the new facility.  OSYSS has agreed to repay the $50,000 paid by the Stars over the course of this lease, and at the end of the lease title will transfer to OSYSS. The legal arrangements between these entities guarantee that the Beavercreek Stars will have first rights to gym time to support their basketball operations needs far into the future.

Organization Philosophy

The organization is duly chartered under the guidelines of the State of Ohio as a non-profit corporation. The Internal Revenue Service recognizes the Beavercreek Stars Inc. as a 501(c)3 organization exempt from federal income tax. As such, donors may deduct contributions to the Beavercreek Stars as provided in section 170 of the Code only to the extent that their contributions are gifts, with no consideration received.

The Beavercreek Stars have clearly been defined as a Competitive Youth Basketball Program. Player selection to a team is solely the discretion of the coaching staff following competitive try-outs. The Stars organization shall develop and promote the basketball skills and talents of all of its players. No specific playing time or position is guaranteed to any player selected to a team. However, the coaching staff has been directed by the Board of Trustees to strive for quality playing time for all players without sacrificing the team goal of winning each contest.

The Beavercreek Stars Youth Basketball Program is a volunteer, non-profit corporation designed to promote high quality, competitive basketball. The program includes both boys and girls in grades 2 through 12 who are eligible to attend class in the Beavercreek public school district without regards to race, religion or socioeconomic status. Specifically, the program is designed to:

1) Develop sound fundamental basketball skills,

2) Teach and promote good sportsmanship,

3) Enhance individual contribution to the team effort,

4) Provide a competitive environment for league and tournament play, and

5) Promote a fraternal spirit among all players and parents.

In 2010, Beavercreek Stars developed a 3rd-6th Grade Recreation Program for the youth of Beavercreek and surrounding area to provide basketball to the youth who wish to play basketball that do not want to be part of the Stars Competitive program.  In 2015 the Recreation Program expanded to 7th-8th grade.  The objectives of the recreation program:

1) Develop sound fundamental basketball skills,

2) Teach and promote good sportsmanship,

3) Enhance individual contribution to the team effort,

4) Provide a safe and fun environment with equal playing time for all participants.

5) Promote a fraternal spirit among all players and parents.
