Ohio Stars AAU Handbook

Beavercreek/Ohio Stars Spring Handbook

Guidelines

This guideline is intended as a supplement to other Beavercreek Stars documents including the Stars Program Handbook.  This supplement is developed for use for non-fall league competition, and is intended to provide guidance to the first year of the spring program.  If these guidelines are found to be in conflict with the handbook or articles of incorporation, those documents will supersede these guidelines.

Objective

Stars is a volunteer, non-profit corporation promoting high quality, competitive basketball. The spring program includes both boys and girls in grades 2 - 12 w/o regards to race, religion or socio-economic status. The purpose of the Spring Program is to:

  • Develop basketball skills,
  • Promote sportsmanship,
  • Enhance individual contribution to the team.
  • Provide a competitive environment for play
  • Promote fraternal spirit among players and parents

Coaches

Applicants for a coaching position with the Beavercreek Stars Spring Program must be approved in the same manner as all Stars coaches.  In summary, coaches must be approved by the majority of the group consisting of the Program Director, Girls Athletic Director, and Boys Athletic Director.

Teams

For 2014, the same three-member group as approves coaches must approve teams.  This is not to imply the group approves or selects players but rather they approve or disapprove the application to have a team.  (Also reference finance section)

Appeal

Teams or coaches who are not approved by the three-member group may appeal their disapproval decision by appealing to the Stars Board of Directors

Selection of Players

Coaches are encouraged, but not required, to maximize selection of players from within the Beavercreek School District.  Players will be selected using the coach’s criteria, which may include:

  • Ability
  • Availability
  • Attitude
  • Athleticism
  • Experience
  • Size
  • Position Requirements (Guard, Forward, Center)
  • Grade
  • Birth date

If no players from Beavercreek meet the coach’s selection criteria, the Stars will not be involved with the team nor will the team be considered to be associated with or part of the Stars organization.

Beavercreek candidates for the team are not guaranteed a spot on a team.  The coach must select the team based on the coach’s criteria.

Teams that are affected by the OSHAA (Ohio High School Athletic Association) rules must comply with the OHSAA rules regarding participation in school athletics to avoid making any player ineligible for High School, Junior High, or Middle School athletics.

Finance

The team and coach determine player participation fee.  A typical fee would be $350.00.  There is no family discount for more than one player.  Player fee is payable to Beavercreek Stars or the designated team treasurer.  Teams must submit an expected income and expense statement to the three-member approval group as part of their team application.

Fee disbursement

Each team may fund uniforms, practice time, tournament, league, coach’s expense or other expense providing they do not exceed the total funds collected by that team plus the teams share of fundraising1 less $400.2

Practice facilities

Each team is responsible for finding and securing appropriate practice facilities.  Use of Beavercreek Schools is to be coordinated through a central coordinator appointed by Beavercreek Stars.

Each team is granted 20 hours of court time for the season at Henley Hall on a preferred basis.3  The team is responsible for signing up for Henley Hall time.  If the team is not able to use the time at Henley Hall there is no refund to or from the Beavercreek Stars to the team or any member of the team.  A Stars team can only bump non-Stars teams when the booking is outside a 30-day window.  Bumps are to be coordinated with an assigned contact from the Stars program.

Uniforms

Selection of uniforms is up to each team.  They are expected to be tasteful and appropriately display the Beavercreek/Ohio Stars colors and name.  A board member of Stars must approve uniform selection.  Sponsors names or logos may be added as long as they are tasteful and appropriate.  It is the team’s responsibility to insure compliance with uniform rules for the leagues, tournaments and associations.

Release forms

Each parent will be expected to sign a release form prior to participation in the Stars Spring program.  Each parent will also be asked to sign Consent to Treat form in case the player needs medical attention.

Work requirements

Coach may elect to assign parents duties to be performed at the coach’s discretion.  Examples include team parent, team travel, team records, team treasurer, etc.

Stars may elect to run a tournament, camp, or other program in order to provide additional financial support to the spring program.  Teams are expected to participate in this fundraiser and other fundraisers.

Teams who choose to participate in fund raising for the Beavercreek/Ohio Stars will be able to utilize funds collected as part of the fundraiser for the team’s expenses.  In cases where multiple Stars teams participate in a fundraiser, the monies will be shared in a manner proportionate to the team’s contribution to the monies collected.

There will be $400 withheld from the team’s payments to Beavercreek Stars that is not available for the teams use.  This fee is to insure the financial integrity of the Beavercreek Stars by insuring the spring teams do not financially burden the Beavercreek Stars.  In return Stars will provide 20 hours for  the season of Henley Hall gym time to the team, however if gym time at Henley Hall is not available or the team elects not to use any or all of the 20 hours of time the team will not receive a full or partial refund of the $400 withholding.

For the 2014 season, the sign up calendar will be held as is until TBD.  The sign-ups already existing as of TBD will be honored, however no new sign-ups will be accepted from non-Stars spring teams until TBD.  This is to allow Stars spring teams an opportunity to book space at Henley Hall without trying to compete with non-Stars teams for Henley Hall bookings.  Based on existing arrangements and expected arrangements with the Beavercreek Schools, Stars teams can reasonably anticipate being able to use Middle School/High school facilities each spring.  Requests and information to use school facilities should be made through Beavercreek Stars Scheduling coordinator.
